Seasonal flu is a common and highly infectious viral illness that is spread through coughs and sneezes. Kids and adults alike can catch it at any time of year, but it is most common in the winter months. Most of the time, your body’s immune system can fight off the virus by itself, meaning the symptoms go away after a few days of rest. There are treatments available for symptomatic relief and prevention or seasonal flu, but many children find it difficult to understand what exactly they should do and why.

With this in mind, Dr. Kim Chilman-Blair and Dr. Kate Hersov teamed up with a leading graphic novel artist to create a series of comic books explaining health conditions to young people from a medical viewpoint. Each comic is written by doctors and peer-reviewed by leading specialists in each respective therapy area. Medikidz is a resource designed to educate not only young patients, peers and their parents, but also to aid practitioners and educators in explaining health conditions as effectively as possible.

The books follow a team of five larger than life superheroes from outer space. The Medikidz each specialise in explaining a different part of the body. What’s Up with Tom is an engaging way to educate children about the medical facts behind what happens in seasonal flu and how to prevent it.

SYNOPSIS:

Tom is awaiting an exciting family camping holiday, when he is hit by the sneeze of a classmate with seasonal flu. Unknowingly, he spreads this to his family, and the holiday adventure is cancelled, much to the annoyance of his siblings. The Medikidz come to the rescue taking Tom on a tour of Mediland, the planet shaped like the human body. They explain what goes on inside the body when you catch the flu. Join them as they witness the immune army’s battle against the invading flu gang, and teach Tom how to avoid getting flu next year.
