Splenectomy
Explanation

Splenectomy is an operation to remove your spleen. You may need a splenectomy if you have thalassaemia, or if you have had an injury that has caused your spleen to split and bleed very badly.

After a splenectomy, you will need extra immunisations and will also need to take an antibiotic, called penicillin, every day to protect you against infections.
