A Slipped Hip Epiphysis (SHE) is what it's called when the head of your femur slips off the neck. This happens because the cartilage of your growth plate is not as strong as the bone around it, and the weight of your body pushing on the head makes it slip off the neck. Sometimes it only moves a tiny bit, while other times it slips quite a long way.

A slip usually happens really slowly over months, so you might not even know that it has happened. Sometimes, it can be made worse by a jump, because the jolt makes the head slide off more suddenly. Once it has started to slip off, it slowly gets worse.

If you have a SHE on one side, there is a 30% chance that you will have it on the other side too. It is much more common in boys than girls, and often happens in big or tall people.
