Sleep Apnoea Mask
A sleep apnoea mask is a mask that connects to a small device called a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine. The CPAP sends air into the mask through a plastic tube. You may need to wear this mask when you go to sleep if you have obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). Together the mask and the CPAP machine push open your blocked airways in your throat with oxygen while you are asleep. Some CPAP devices keep your airways clear all the time. Others can sense when you have stopped breathing and supply air to your mask when you need it.
Because the airflow may be harsh on your nose and make it dry, newer CPAP machines have humidifiers to make the air moist and more pleasant to your airways. This prevents common side effects of using a sleep apnoea mask such as sore throat or nose bleeds.
