Metformin Hydrochloride
Metformin hydrocholoride (also called Metformin or Glucophage®) is a medicine used for treating type 2 diabetes.
What does metformin hydrochloride do?
Metformin hydrochloride works by stopping your liver from releasing too much sugar into your blood. It also makes your body more sensitive to insulin, so that you use more of the sugar in your blood.
What does it look like?
Metformin hydrochloride comes as a white tablet that you swallow with a glass of water.
It can also come as a white powder in a sachet, which you dissolve in water and drink.
When do I need to take it?
Your doctor will tell you how often you should take your metformin hydrochloride, and when you should take it. You will probably need to take it two or three times a day.
But what if I don't feel like taking it?
It's important that you take your metformin hydrochloride, even if you don't feel like it. It will help to control the amount of sugar in your blood.
Don't stop taking it before talking to your doctor, even if you feel ok!
What should I do if I forget to take it?
If you forget to take your metformin hydrochloride, don't worry. Just take your usual dose when you remember. If it's nearly time for your next dose, just take your normal dose when you would usually take it.
Don't take twice as much next time to catch up. Remember the three Ds: Don't Double Dose!
How much should I take?
This depends on how old you are and how much you weigh. Your doctor will tell you how much metformin hydrochloride you should take and how often you need to take it.
