Melanin
Explanation

Melanin is a substance in your body that gives your skin, eyes and hair their colour! It is made by cells called melanocytes, which are in your skin. If you have dark skin, you have more melanin than someone who has light skin.

Melanin also helps to protect your skin from the sun - when you are out in it, the melanocytes start making more melanin, which makes your skin go darker. Without enough melanin, your skin would not be able to protect itself.

Do you have freckles? These are just small, dense areas of increased melanin!
