HIV is a virus. It is much more dangerous than other viruses like colds and flu, because it can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
HIV's full name is human immunodeficiency virus. It is a retrovirus that infects the T-cell commanders of your immune system army. Most kids with HIV got it from their mums before they were born, but you can also get it by mixing blood with someone else.
There are actually two types of the HIV virus - HIV 1 and HIV 2 .HIV 2 is usually only founds in parts of Africa, but HIV 1 is found all over the world. Unfortunately, the more common form is more dangerous.
