Benzoyl Peroxide
Explanation

Benzoyl peroxide (also called other names, including Acnecide, Brevoxyl and Panoxyl) is a medicine used to treat acne.

What does it do?

Benzoyl peroxide kills the bacteria on your skin that cause acne.

What does it look like?

Benzoyl peroxide comes as a clear gel or a white cream that you rub into your skin. It also comes as a wash that you use on your body.

When do I have to use it?

Your doctor will tell you when to use your benzoyl peroxide. You will probably need to rub it onto the area of skin where you have acne once or twice a day.

Before using it, you should wash the area of skin and pat it dry.

But what if I don't feel like using it?

It's important to use your benzoyl peroxide as your doctor has told you to. If you don't use it, your acne could get worse.

What should I do if I forget to use it?

If you forget to use your benzoyl peroxide, don't worry. Just continue to use it as normal, putting it on your skin when you next normally would.

How much should I use?

Your doctor or pharmacist will tell you how much benzoyl peroxide to use. Your doctor may start you off on a weak strength of benzoyl peroxide. Then, when your skin has got used to it, he or she may put you onto a stronger version.

What are the most likely side effects I might get?

When you first start using benzoyl peroxide, it can make your skin red, irritated, very dry, tight or itchy. It may also start to peel or flake. These side effects are usually not too bad, and may get better after a few weeks, as your skin gets used to the benzoyl peroxide. They will also get better if you use a weaker strength of the medicine.

When you stop using benzoyl peroxide, the side effects will go away completely.

Are there any other side effects I might get?

Some people may have an allergic reaction to benzoyl peroxide. This could cause a bad rash on your skin, or make your face to swell up. If this happens, stop using it immediately and tell your doctor.

Is it safe for me to be using it?

If you know you are allergic or very sensitive to benzoyl peroxide, don't use it. Tell your doctor and he or she can choose another treatment for your acne.

Is it ok for me to use it if I'm already taking other medicines?

Yes, but you should tell your doctor about any other medicines that you are taking, or have taken, recently, including herbal medicines.

Do I need to know anything else about it?

Benxoyl peroxide can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. You should try and stay out of direct sunlight for long periods when you are using benzoyl peroxide.

Benzoyl peroxide also bleaches fabric! Be careful not to get it on your clothes, as they will change colour!
