Azelaic Acid
Azelaic acid (also called Finacea and Skinoren) is a medicine used to treat acne on your face.
What does azelaic acid do?
Azelaic acid works by killing the bacteria that causes acne. It also helps stop the changes in your skin that lead to pimples or spots.
What does it look like?
Azelaic acid comes as a white or yellowish-white gel or cream that you rub into your skin.
How do I use it?
Your doctor will tell you exactly how to use your azelaic acid. First you should wash your face with water or a mild facial cleanser if it is greasy. Then you should gently rub the azelaic acid into the areas of your face that are affected by acne. Make sure you wash your hands afterwards. You should do this twice a day unless your doctor says differently.
But what if I don't feel like using it?
It's important that you use your azelaic acid every day. If you don't, it may not work as well as it could, and your acne might come back or even get worse.
What should I do if I forget to take it?
If you forget to use your azelaic acid, don't worry. Just use it normally the next time you would usually use it.
What are the most likely side effects I might get?
Like all medicines, azelaic acid can cause side effects. You might get some side effects, or you might get none at all. The side effect you are most likely to have is pain or a burning feeling when you apply the gel or cream. Azelaic acid can also cause red, dry or itchy skin, although this is less likely.
If any side effects are bothering you, talk to your doctor. He or she may tell you to use less azelaic acid, or only use it once a day.
Are there any other side effects that you haven't mentioned?
It's very unlikely but azelaic acid can sometimes cause a painful skin rash or an allergic reaction. It can also make your skin become very sensitive to sunlight. If you notice these or any other side effects, talk to your doctor about it.
Is it safe for me to use azelaic acid?
You shouldn't use azelaic acid if you know you are allergic to it. It is important that you tell your doctor and he or she will choose another treatment for your acne.
Is it okay for me to use azelaic acid if I'm already using other treatments other medicines?
It may be harmful if you use other products on your face at the same time as azelaic acid, including ones you bought without a prescription. Make sure that you tell your doctor about any other treatments or medicines that you are taking, or have taken recently, including any herbal medicines.
Do I need to know anything else about azelaic acid?
You should only use azelaic acid if you are aged 12 or older unless your doctor says it is okay to do so.
