Medikidz Explain Melanoma - at St. George's College, Surrey! With summer coming up, it's really important that everyone knows about the damage sun can do to your skin, especially kids. The more time you spend out in the sun without protection, the more likely you are to get burnt. And the more often you get burnt, the more likely you are to get melanoma (a type of skin cancer) at some point when you're older.
The biggest part of the Medikidz mission is to explain medical conditions to young people so that they have a better understanding of what to watch out for. For melanoma, the main message is prevention. But you can't just tell kids to stay out of the sun unless you explain why, and that means explaining how sun damage can cause skin cancer.
On 4th May, Dr. James Hogg, Senior Medical Writer at Medikidz, went along to give a school assembly at St. George's College in Weybridge, Surrey. The whole Second Year got the low-down on the science of the skin, the effect that sunlight has on skin cells, what a cancer really is and how to spot melanoma when it's developing. Dr. Hogg finished up with a clear message on what you can do when you are out in the sun to keep your skin safe. Remember, slip on a shirt, slop on some sunscreen and slap on a hat!
Eleanor Thomson, Head of Second Year at St. Georges's college welcomed the presentation on melanoma and agreed that Dr. Hogg's "talk was informative and entertaining at the same time. The entire year group were listening to every word and very engaged by his talk. He was very good at describing the medical information about skin and cancer in a way that we could all understand... On behalf of the second years I would like to thank Dr. Hogg for his presentation and for taking the time to come to the College".
